The Short Version

The Long Version

Getting your young ones around is already enough of a challenge, so things can get a little hectic when the weather takes a turn for the worse. A poorly-designed stroller makes it near impossible to get outdoors in wet or cold weather, which means tots might end up missing out on new adventures.

If you haven’t done the research, you’d probably assume that a standard stroller can handle everything you throw at it. Sadly, that’s not the case. Basic models simply lack the features essential for comfortable cruising across bumpy ground, whereas snow-friendly strollers have been specifically designed to withstand a little extra stress.

Strolling in snow may sound like something out of a fairy-tale, but there’s now plenty of strollers out there for doing exactly that. Whether you’re committed to staying active or eager to show your little one the wonders of nature, choosing a snow-friendly stroller means you can enjoy quality time together all year round.

If the thought of winter wandering sounds fun but you aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. There’s seemingly infinite strollers out there, so it’s more than a little easy to get confused. Choose the best and skip the stress with our collection of the top snow-friendly strollers you can find!

This is a seriously kitted-out stroller, providing a ride quality that we feel is extremely hard to come by. It also doesn’t fall into the trap of looking too functional, thanks to the chunky build and two-tone contrast, resulting in a durable yet stylish finish.

The shock-absorbing suspension system, air-filled 16” rear wheels, and 12.5” swivel-lock front wheel are immensely impressive, giving parents ultimate control over the ride. If you’re primary concern is ride comfort, worry not. The large 16” rear and 12” front wheels practically glide over the roughest of ground, and you simply can’t get any better than all-wheel suspension and air-filled rubber tyres. PRICE: $$

PROS: Pushed as stroller and pulled as wagon; durable steel frame; UPF 50+ Sun Canopy; off-roading wheels; swivel front wheels; individual wheel brakes; 3-position telescopic handlebar; decent storage

CONS: Not very compact when folded; would have been great if the dual canopies connected

As a stroller wagon, the Evenflo Pivot Xplore is in a category of its own. That’s not to say that it’s any less capable on snow, but simply that it offers a special and thrilling experience over more conventional strollers. Just as kids are kept comfy, so too can parents stroll along happily. The 3-position telescopic handlebar is easily adjusted, using a simple switch to change between push and pull modes.

There’s not much that’s more fun for a kid than to cruise in a wagon, but if they’re still very young the Evenflo Pivot Xplore will fit a toddler or car seat. When tots get even older, they can’t wait to take on the responsibility of pulling the wagon themselves.

BUYING ADVICE FOR STROLLERS FOR SNOW

A stroller is a big investment, so it’s natural to take your time when shopping around. Product pages and online retailers can be confusing if you aren’t sure what to look out for, so here’s some buying advice on snow-friendly strollers to make sense of the endless spec sheets.

Stroller Features

THREE-WHEEL DESIGN: Rough terrains demand excellent wheels, thus parents should think about how many they need, their diameter, and the way in which they work. Generally speaking, strollers with three wheels do better in the snow than those with four wheels. Providing that the front wheel is lockable, which is usually the case, a three-wheel design allow parents to enjoy greater manoeuvrability without hurting stability, which can ultimately keep your family safer in rougher conditions.

LARGE WHEEL DIAMETER: Larger wheels give you greater grip, whether you’re strolling down a snowy street or tearing up a path less trodden. If you’re well accustomed to heavier snowfall, seek out models able to boast large diameter wheels, as these will perform infinitely better than standard size. You can try ‘all-terrain stroller’ as a starter search term, or check out our full round up of the best all-terrain strollers.

AIR-FILLED TYRES: It should come as no surprise that the right tyres play a key role on any stroller for snow. While urban designs typically favour all-plastic wheels, those simply won’t do for more challenging ground and weather. For the best performance, look for air-filled rubber tyres as they offer the smoothest ride. The next best is foam-filled tyres, which do well in lighter snow.

SUSPENSION SYSTEM: While a suspension system isn’t a given, even on all-terrain strollers, it’s certainly something you should think about if you know you’re going to be adventuring. Travelling over snow has unique difficulties, where you can’t always see the dips and bumps ahead of you. Front-wheel suspension will bear most of the brunt, but all-wheel systems give you the best performance by far.

BRAKES: A large proportion of snow-friendly strollers make use of hand-operated brakes, integrated into the handlebar so that parents retain full control at all times. Depending on how you plan to use your stroller, you may or may not actually need hand brakes. A wrap-around hand strap and single-step pedal brake are enough for casual strolling, but do check if hand brakes are a necessity for you.

When it is snowing outside, the right stroller for the conditions can make all the difference!

Stroller Specifications

WEIGHT: Mass at rest likes to stay at rest, while mass in motion likes to stay in motion. You can thank Sir Isaac Newton for that law, but in plain terms it just means that heavy things are harder to move around. Most strollers designed to go off-road weigh in between 25 and 30 lbs (11.3 and 13.6 kg), though there are high-end models that manage to shave this number down further.

As something you’re going to be pushing around for years to come, you’ll want to opt for a stroller with a high strength to weight ratio – which is why stroller frames are most commonly made from aluminium.

CAPACITY: Be careful around the word capacity, as it’s not always clear what is being referred to; sometimes, the manufacturer will give an inflated number that is actually the seat capacity plus the cargo capacity. If you work off a false estimate, you may find that your child outgrows the stroller soon than expected.

Generally speaking, strollers that can handle snow will have a seat capacity of between 50 and 75 lbs (22.7 and 34 kg). As you can see, this is quite a large range, so it’s important to check weight restrictions if your child is larger than average.

DIMENSIONS: When compared to umbrella strollers, or even standard city models, all-terrain products that handle snow are quite a bit larger. Remember that these kinds of strollers are designed with the great outdoors in mind, thus lugging them onto public transport probably isn’t going to be as convenient as you may hope.

If you’re particularly concerned, have a look at both assembled and folded dimensions. If you’re curious the BOB Gear Revolution Flex 3.0 has assembled dimensions of L46 X W25 X H43, but just L38 X W25 X H16 when folded, which is over two-thirds less. Everyone understands that strollers have to fit inside the car, though some designers take this more seriously than others.

MAINTENANCE: Most manufacturers of snow-friendly strollers usually assume that things will get a little damp and grubby at some point. There are many features that make the lives of parents easier. Look out for removable seat covers, canopies and storage compartments, as this will offer you much simpler cleaning. The majority of manufacturers use fabric materials that are easily wiped down with a wet cloth, so avoid using bleach and other harsh chemicals.

Add-on Accessories

If you find your perfect stroller but then find out it’s missing one or two must-have features, remember that there’s lots of add-on accessories available. You can purchase branded or third-party accessories, increasing the functionality of your stroller without spending lots of extra money.

STROLLER BUNTING / FOOTMUFF: Effectively a child sleeping bag designed for your stroller, keeping little ones toasty in cold weather so that they can have fun outdoors all year round.

WEATHER GUARD: A clear plastic sheet that protects your child from rain and snow. As a fairly straightforward add-on, it’s possible to find good quality products from third-party providers. You can also find bug shields for summer time, too.

PARENT ORGANIZER / CONSOLE: A great deal of strollers will feature an integrated console, or provide an attachment. If not, it’s easy to find a wide variety of organizers to suit individual needs.

TRAVEL BAG: Strollers aren’t generally sold with travel bags, but some manufacturers sell them as optional extra. If you’d like to keep things spotless, a travel bag is your best friend, especially in snowy weather.
