Reverse Osmosis (RO) may sound like some terrible band name, or drag you straight back to your chemistry lessons, but if you're after purified water, this filtration process offers unparalleled performance.
Through a series of stages, pressurized water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane that nasty heavy metals and contaminants simply cannot penetrate.
The efficiency of the process can vary depending on the membrane, water pressure, water temperature and other factors. But in most settings an RO system removes up to 99% of countless impurities, including lead, fluoride, chlorine, nitrates, sulfates and arsenic... making reverse osmosis one of the best ways to get truly “pure” water!

Conventional reverse osmosis systems leave water slightly acidic. Although they are great at eliminating contaminants, they take out many natural minerals too.

Although manufactured in Taiwan, it’s all assembled in the US, supporting their commitment to premium components. Indeed, all of the applicable components meet the NSF 58 requirements. The 3-in-1 PAC composite filter consists of 2 sediment filters and a carbon filter, effectively eliminating sand, dirt, rust, chlorine and odor from the water before it is passed through the RO membrane.

BUYING ADVICE FOR TANKLESS REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMS
There are core similarities when it comes to reverse osmosis systems, namely the RO membrane technology and hook-ups. However, the pre and post-filtration methods do vary, along with pressure requirements, flow rate and drain ratio. In this section we give the technical breakdown on these details.
Pre-filters
RO systems vary in the number of stages used to purify the water. While the reverse osmosis membrane defines the process, there are a number of pre-filters that can be employed to further sanitize the solution. Most manufacturers recommend that these pre-filters be changed every 6 months to a year, depending on household usage and water conditions.
POLYPROPYLENE: A polypropylene (PP) filter mechanically removes sand, dirt and rust particles, amongst others. In a RO system, it is a pre-filter, meaning it appears before the RO membrane.
CARBON BLOCK: The carbon block (CB) filter is another pre-filter made from a solid block of compressed carbon. They are incredibly effective at filtering a multitude of smaller contaminants.
COMPOSITE: A composite filter (CF) is typically a combination of PP cotton layers with an activated carbon section. These filters achieve the same results as their constituents, yet are presented as a single filter.
GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBON: A granular activated carbon (GAC) filter is made from organic materials high in carbon, such as coconut shell or charcoal. These pre-filters are especially useful for dechlorinating water, but they remove many other chemicals that affect odor and taste, such as hydrogen sulphide.
Reverse osmosis membrane
The reverse osmosis membrane is the star of the show in your RO system – the core technology behind the entire purification process.
WHAT IS IT: It is a semipermeable layer, which just means a solvent (water) will fit through, whilst solutes (contaminants) cannot.
PORE SIZE: A reverse osmosis membrane has a pore size of 0.0001 microns, which is why so many contaminants can be effectively removed.
LIFESPAN: In order to increase the lifespan of this membrane, it’s important to regularly change the pre-filters.
Water pressure
OPTIMAL PRESSURE: Most households will have a water pressure between 45 and 80 psi (3 to 5.5 bar), meaning that a reverse osmosis system is a viable option for purifying water. However, reverse osmosis systems work best at higher pressures, around 60 to 80 psi (4 to 5.5 bar).
BOOSTER PUMPS: Some RO systems will require a minimum psi to operate, though some use a power supply to increase water pressure prior to filtration. Those with consistently low water pressure should carefully consider whether they will require a RO system supported with a boost pump.
Other performance metrics
FLOW RATE: The rate of flow can be presented as either gallons per minute, typically around 0.4, or gallons per day, ranging anywhere from 50 to 600, and even more with high-powered units. Unless you require significant amounts of water, you will have no issue with 400GPD RO systems, though offices and restaurants should think about investing in machines with higher capacities.
WATER DRAIN RATIO: If you’re concerned with water consumption, the drain ratio is an important metric. Unlike many other methods, RO systems produce wastewater as part of their purification process. That is, if you ingest one gallon of water into the system you will get less than one gallon of pure water at the other end – with the difference being the so-called “wastewater” generated by the system.
Drain ratios represent the amount of pure-to-waste water (i.e. pure:waste) generated in the purification process. Unfortunately, quite a number of reverse osmosis systems operate at a 1:3 or even 1:4 drain ratio, meaning that as much as 4 gallons of water are used to produce a single gallon of pure water. However, some newer RO systems have much better drain ratios, for instance 1.5:1 or even 2:1 (where more pure water is produced than waste) – making them vastly superior for environmentalists.
TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLDS: Total dissolved solids, or simply TDS, is the term used to describe the inorganic salts and small amounts of organic matter present in solution in water. Generally, a TDS of 300mg/liter is considered excellent, 300-600mg/l is good, 600-900mg/l is average, 900-1200mg/l is poor, and water with a TDS greater than 1200mg/l is considered unacceptable. Most RO systems can easily reduce TDS in water to values of under 50mg/l.
